This July and August, IOCB Prague is hosting its tenth Summer Student Program for master’s students from European universities, including Cambridge, Madrid, and Bologna. Fifty students applied this year – more than in previous years – and fourteen were admitted to the program and arrived in Prague.
Research group leaders selected the candidates; in addition to CVs, the key criterion was each student’s field of study. Students join ongoing research projects immediately and take on defined tasks. This year, twelve laboratories are hosting students. At the end of the summer, all participants will present their results at a final symposium.
“We want to introduce promising young scientists from European universities to the institute and our research and give them the chance to get directly involved and gain firsthand experience with top-level science. Some later return as PhD students or postdocs,” says Martina Nussbaumerová, who coordinates the Summer Student Program at IOCB Prague.
The idea of inviting aspiring chemists and biochemists came from former Deputy director for strategic development Martin Fusek. IOCB Prague provides dormitory housing and a stipend of about €1,000 for the entire stay to help cover living expenses, and current PhD students typically serve as guides for the participants of the program.
