On May 15, 2018, the Learned Society of the Czech Republic elected at its XXIV. General Assembly Prof. Pavel Jungwirth as the future chairman of the Society.

The Learned Society was founded in 1994 as a successor to the long-standing traditions of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences, interrupted by the Communist dictatorship. It brings together significant scientists (a maximum of 111 full members, along with emeriti and foreign members), and its main mission is to support free conduct of research and furtherance of scientific knowledge.

The Society is governed by a Council consisting of a trio of the acting, future and former chairperson, together with the secretary and heads of the four sections of the Society. At present, both the future and the former chairman (Dr. Zdeněk Havlas) are from IOCB Prague, while the acting chairwoman is Prof. Blanka Říhová from the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS.
