Eight weeks in labs. Students from across Europe spend the summer at IOCB Prague
Every summer, master’s students from European universities come to work in IOCB Prague’s laboratories. Sixteen students participated in the 11th Summer Student Program, gaining experience in 12 research groups over the course of eight weeks.
From mid-July through early September, the participants become part of the IOCB Prague community and work on specific research tasks in selected laboratories. The program culminates in a final conference where the students present the results of their work.
“I learned chemistry in the States, where the curriculum is different in many ways. It was very eye-opening to see different procedures in chemistry and how you can get the same result in different ways. It shifted my understanding of how to do things,” says Kate Principio, a graduate of McDaniel College in Maryland, who completed part of her studies in Budapest.
The program is primarily intended for students in European master’s programs in fields such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or computational and theoretical chemistry. IOCB Prague received approximately 50 applications for this year’s program.
The program allows them to get a sense of what it is like to work at IOCB Prague and connect with researchers at the institute. Some later return to IOCB Prague for PhD or postdoctoral positions. The institute also provides participants with housing and a stipend of 980 euros.
